About GarageFit Guide

GarageFit Guide exists because most garage storage advice ignores fit:

  • racks recommended without checking that they clear your garage door
  • shelves recommended without checking that your totes fit
  • wall systems recommended without asking where your studs are

We start with the garage, then pick the product.

Ryan Kessler, Garage Storage Editor

Ryan Kessler runs GarageFit Guide. He got into garage storage the way most people do: a two-car garage that only fit one car, a ceiling rack that would not clear the door opener, and a wall of shelving that leaned toward the driveway.

Since then he has helped friends, neighbors, and renters lay out dozens of garages. His approach is simple: measure first, match the product to the structure (studs, joists, slab, ceiling height), and only then compare brands.

On this site he compares products on the numbers that decide whether they work in a real garage: footprint, load rating per shelf, drop height, stud and joist compatibility, and how many square feet of floor they give back.

What makes this site different

  • Original tools: the tote-to-shelf fit table and the overhead clearance calculator answer the questions that decide fit.
  • One page per question: each guide answers one specific decision, and links to the next step.
  • Honest product cards: every product says who should skip it, and we flag listings with conflicting specs.

How we work

We compare products using:

  • manufacturer specifications
  • published dimensions and load ratings
  • installation requirements
  • patterns in verified owner feedback
