How We Research Garage Storage

Garage storage only works if it fits the garage. Our method is built around that.

1. Start with the decision, not the product

Each guide begins with a question a buyer actually has:

  • Will this rack clear my garage door?
  • Will my totes fit this shelf?
  • Can I install it without drilling?

Then we work out the measurements needed to answer it.

2. Pull specs from the source

From manufacturer listings and documentation, we record:

  • dimensions and drop ranges
  • load ratings
  • stud and joist requirements
  • materials

When a listing contradicts itself (for example, two different shelf ratings), we say so and plan around the lower number.

3. Run fit checks

We calculate how products work together:

  • totes per shelf, from outside dimensions
  • maximum rack drop, from ceiling and door heights
  • walkway space, from shelf depth

These checks power our fit table and clearance calculator.

4. Read owner feedback for patterns

We look for repeated themes in verified owner reviews: assembly problems, parts that fail, items that do not match the listing. One complaint is noise. The same complaint from many owners is a pattern worth reporting.

5. Say who should skip it

Every product card includes a "skip it if" line. A product that is wrong for your garage is not a good product for you, however popular it is.

6. Keep it current

Listings change. We review guides regularly and update the date when we make meaningful changes. We do not show prices, because they change constantly; use the button on each product to see the current price.

What we do not do

  • We do not accept payment for placement or rankings.
  • We do not claim lab testing we have not done.
  • We do not copy manufacturer marketing as our verdict.
