Short answer

For most people, a garage workbench should be about wrist height when standing with your arms at your sides. That is often 34 to 38 inches.

  • Depth: 24 inches.
  • Length: 48 inches for repairs, 60 to 72 inches for woodworking.
  • Floor space: leave about 36 inches clear in front.

Working height

The quick test: stand straight with your arms relaxed at your sides. The height of the crease in your wrist is a good starting height for a general-purpose bench.

Then adjust for the work:

Task Adjust from wrist height Why
Heavy work (planing, hammering) 2 to 4 in lower Use body weight
General assembly and repairs At wrist height Balanced
Detail work (electronics, sharpening) 2 to 6 in higher Less bending, closer view

This is why adjustable-height benches are popular. The WORKPRO and Betterhood let you change height per project.

Depth

  • 20 to 24 inches: fits most garages. You can reach the back for tools and outlets.
  • 30 inches: more room for woodworking and assemblies, but it takes more floor.
  • Over 30 inches: hard to reach across from one side. Only useful if you can walk around it.

Length

Length Good for
36 to 48 in Repairs, small projects, one-car garages
60 in General DIY with room for a vise and a project
70 to 72 in Woodworking, long boards
96 in (two benches) Separate zones, such as assembly and repair

Floor clearance

  • About 36 inches of clear space in front of the bench.
  • The parked car should not crowd the bench. Measure with the car door open.
  • Outlets nearby so cords do not cross walkways. Plug benches with built-in power strips into a wall outlet.

Above the bench

  • Pegboard or tool board from bench height to about 72 inches. See tool organizers.
  • Wall cabinets 18 to 24 inches above the top. See wall-mounted cabinets.
  • A light directly over the work surface, so your body does not cast shadows on the work.

In a one-car garage

If a fixed bench does not fit beside the car, consider:

  • a folding bench that hangs on the wall
  • a fold-down wall-mounted bench
  • a rolling bench that parks against the back wall

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard height of a garage workbench?

Many workbenches sit around 34 to 36 inches, similar to a kitchen counter. The best height for you depends on your height and the work; adjustable benches let you set it.

How deep should a garage workbench be?

24 inches suits most garages and most work. Go up to 30 inches for woodworking or large assemblies if you have the floor space. Deeper than 30 inches is hard to reach across.

How long should a garage workbench be?

48 inches for repairs and hobbies, 60 to 72 inches for woodworking and multi-step projects, and 96 inches if you want two work zones side by side.

How much space do I need in front of a workbench?

Leave about 36 inches of clear floor in front of the bench so you can stand, move, and handle materials.
